Why Am I Here?
Ever sit and wonder, “Why am I here?” or “What was I created for?" I have!
It’s kind of miraculous when you really think about it...
Out of alllll the things that the God of the entire universe could have created, He thought to piece together little ole’ me, breathe life into my lungs and send me into this Earth for a specific purpose and assignment to complete before He calls me back home. It’s mind-blowing to know that He knew me in my mother’s womb, He knows the number of hairs on my head and He’s called me His own! Not only me, but you too! Before we were even a THOUGHT in our parent’s minds, God knew us.
I don’t know about you but just having that truth in my heart alone boosts my confidence and helps me put things into perspective anytime my mind tries to tell me otherwise.
Before we dive into answering the topic question of “Why am I here?”, I do think it’s important to first note the amazing gift it is to even have these types of thoughts and conversations. We have to approach this question with thanksgiving and realize the huge honor it is to be able to ask God questions like this!!
So, I have 3 key-points to share and 2 questions that I ask within this post that I want you to answer when you have some time to really sit and think about them...Feel free to DM or email me your answers, thoughts or anything else you feel led to share!
Ok, let’s go back to the day you were born…
Everyone was so excited! Any sound you made brought rejoicing & admiration. Your parents marveled at the mere sight of you. You were their precious baby. A special gift. You were the expression of their love formed in the flesh. Before you arrived, your parents likely had a baby shower where people freely & willingly gave you gifts- clothes, shoes, gadgets, books, etc. ...BEFORE YOU WERE EVEN BORN- You were on their minds. So much so that people invested in you and took time out to make sure you had everything you needed.
As a newborn- your parents showered you with gifts.
In addition to receiving physical gifts from your parents & loved ones, you were also equipped with spiritual gifts from your Heavenly Father. Yes, even as an infant God placed gifts within you and gave you a purpose.
This thought brings me to my first point:
When we identify our God-given gifts and begin sharing them to uplift others, we will have more clarity as to why we are here.
Matthew 7:11 says, "If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”
I mean just think about that, if as a child your mom knew how to put a smile on your face by gifting you with something special, your heart should BEAM knowing that God’s gifts are even better! Better than anything our earthly minds could imagine. The key words that stood out to me in this scripture was right at the end- “to those who ask him!”
Question #1 - Have you asked God to reveal to you your unique and special gifts? If you’re already aware of them, what are they?
Don’t be shy when answering this question. We sometimes tend to downplay and shy away from calling out the wonderful things about ourselves (especially women) but, I challenge you to do just that. Literally, write out what you believe you’re really good at. What do you believe to be a God-given gift that you possess?
Don’t overthink it- if you’re really good at organizing things, that’s a gift, baby-girl. If you’re naturally drawn to helping people. Gift. If you find yourself writing songs and poetry all the time. Gift. If you can talk to people and be around folks all day and not feel completely exhausted but instead it actually gives you energy. Gift.
It’s not bragging, sis. It’s simply stating facts. You’re the bomb! So, write it out to remind yourself.
Write these things down so you can become aware of these gifts and begin cultivating them.
I feel some of you rolling your eyes while reading this saying to yourself, “I don’t have any gifts. I’m just cute and have a degree. I’m not gifted.” GIRL STOPPP! I don’t buy it. We were all created with gifts.. . don’t believe me??
"In His grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.” Romans 12: 6-8 NLT
If you’re not aware of the gifts God has freely given you, no worries! Simply ask Him to show you. In my own life, it has been in the simplest ways. For example, I worked night shift this week with my nursing job. I got off from working a 12-13 hour shift, came home, took a shower and instead of going straight to sleep I went to a coffee shop to write this blog. I stayed there for 3-4 hours. When I finished, I got back to my apartment, sorted through some emails from my modeling agencies, packed for a trip I’m going on in 2 days and started my day with the other jobs I’m apart of.
It’s safe to say that I had zero sleep but the crazy thing is, God gave me the energy to stay up and work! He led me in what to post about for this new blog. He confirmed in that moment that this is something I’m passionate about. A gift. I’m thankful for it and I don’t take it lightly. If only one person reads this and is drawn closer to Jesus then it was worth it and I’d stay up again after a night shift to write another blog post if God told me to.
Another example- when I was in college (nursing school), there were SO many times I would go to an early AM class, grab lunch to go, head to a photo-shoot that my agent booked me for, come back to my dorm later that night, study (or at-least attempt to), prepare for whichever pageant I was competing in at the time (I’ve competed A LOT. My pageant career lasted 10 years! My last semester of college I won the title of Miss SC USA!!), study some more, then finally go to bed. Like, what?? I look back and think HOW SWAY? But, by the grace of God, I made it through to write about it today! Lol.
You can choose to look at those examples one of two ways- 1. “You’re crazy! It doesn’t take all of that” or, 2. “That’s a gift, sis. Rock out!” I chose to view those situations in my life with the latter mentality.
If it weren’t for God’s grace over my life to do those things, they wouldn’t have gotten done. I’m grateful. I count those examples (and sooo many other instances in my life) as God revealing unique gifts that He has placed within me and how walking out in those gifts brings more clarity as to why I’m here...why God created me.
This brings me to my second point which is:
We each bring something different to the table. Your God-given gifts may look very different from mine. Stop comparing yourself to others!
You might not be interested in starting a blog, competing in pageants, being a nurse, modeling, etc. That may not be your story and that’s OK! I think it’s so cool that God didn’t make us all the same. I love talking with and getting to know people in and outside of the industries I work in.
I share my personal examples for you to reflect over your own life and start identifying some things you are passionate about. What are you willing to sacrifice a few hours of sleep for? What are you willing to wake up early and go to bed late for? What is that passion or gift that you think about and get butterflies? What is the thing you feel flooded with creative ideas for?
Take that to God and say, “OK, here’s what I think You have gifted me in. I feel passionate and alive when these doors open in my life. Show me what you want me to do. Direct my path.”
Pray and wait for His answer.
When you’re praying, be sure to not just list off what you believe you’re gifted at- leave room for Him to show you other things you may not have even been aware of within yourself.
Also, check your motives. When I won Miss South Carolina USA and was in preparation for competing for the national title of Miss USA, I prayed often for Godly motives.
I would ask myself, “Why do I really want this? Is it to get accolades from people?” Heck no!
I learned real quick in the pageant world, people love you and sing your praises one day then hate you the next. I knew that my motives were pure as to why I wanted to compete. God clearly showed me what to do during my time there and gave me the words to say. Placing Top 5 at Miss USA was a huge honor and I truly had the time of my life that year. It was most definitely a stepping stone for me to walk more into my God-given purpose and I’m thankful for all that I learned during that season. But through that entire process, I had to continuously check my motive. I never wanted it to be about me. I honestly wanted Jesus to get all the glory out of everything I did.
This leads me to my second question for you:
Question #2- Is what you’re striving towards bringing glory to God?
When gaining clarity as to why we’re here- we have to know our basic purpose is to worship God, build for the Kingdom and encourage and welcome others into the body of Christ.
After assessing our unique gifts, we have to then ask ourselves- Is this gift helping to aid in any of the above things mentioned…
Are my gifts being used to help encourage and build others up in Christ?
Is this bringing glory to God?
Could my gifts be used to welcome new believers into the body of Christ?
You may be thinking, “But Megan, the only thing I’m really good at is baking homemade treats and pies. That can’t bring glory to God. That’s not spiritually deep enough.”
GIRL. If you don’t get up and bake a couple batches of those desserts, pass them out to those in need, gift them to your family/friends or even open up your own little bakery that plays bomb worship music and has scriptures hanging all over the walls. Chilllleeeee, I would be there everyday because I love sweets and I love Jesus so, yours is the establishment that would get my coins...Period. That's a gift and God can use that!
Another example you may be thinking, “The only thing I’m really passionate about is my dog. I love animals.” Ok great! That’s not everybody’s gift. Everyone doesn’t have a natural inclination to care for animals. But guess what, the world needs people like you that have a true heart to care for and help dogs.
What if God leads you to start a dog-walking company or an animal sitting business and over time you develop a relationship with the owners...ya’ll form a small group or a bible study and BOOM! You all are praying for each-other. The dogs are getting prayed over. Everybody’s getting the Word and God is being glorified. That's a gift and God can use that!
Seriously, the list goes on and on. There is no one formula. I thought for the longest time, there was no way God could use my pageant career and now model & acting industry work in a spiritual way but I stood corrected! There have been times where other contestants and I stood backstage holding hands, praying and thanking God. I have been in a dressing room about to go on stage and another contestant just walks up to me and asks me to pray with her. I have been on big production sets and the conversation of God and the Holy Spirit just randomly comes up. YES! God can be glorified in numerous ways! Don't place Him in a box. His ways are not our ways. His thinking is not our thinking.
Third and final point-
God can use ANYONE and open ANY DOOR He chooses to. Don’t ever think for one second that you’re not here for a special reason. The world needs your flavor.
Matthew 5:13 tells us we are the salt of the earth! I don't know about you but I like my dishes well seasoned. The food needs it and the world needs YOU.
Get up, get busy and walk in your gifts with no fear. He will lead you on the right path but, it’s hard to lead someone that’s not even moving. You have to start somewhere.
My advice when answering question #2 is to be completely honest with yourself. If you truly want to get to living out your full potential and purpose, eliminate things in your life that are no longer serving you and are not bringing glory to God.
Is living with that boyfriend and having sex with him outside of marriage pushing you closer to your purpose?
Is turning up every weekend and attending all the campus parties God’s best for you?
Is tearing down and gossiping about that girl you’re jealous of revealing your Godly gifts and talents?
Is disobeying your parents and breaking curfew showing God that He can trust you with more?
To my model friends, is doing things on set that you’re uncomfortable with and don’t agree with morally showing you to be a light in a dark place?
Answer these honestly. You are not alone. I can say that I’ve done all this (and more which I’ll discuss in a later blog) and I just thank God for His mercy and forgiveness! If God can change my heart and help me to see things clearly, He can do it for ANYONE.
Be honest with Him. We don’t have time to waste. When asking the question- “Why am I here?” We should be in expectation of receiving an answer. With that answer, we can expect some instructions too.
Every-time I ask for clarity about something and feel ready for the next level, I usually sense the Holy Spirit leading me to let go of someone, something or an old way of thinking. It may suck at first. The pruning process is hard. You may cry and mourn the old you but it’s so worth it! You’ll get over it. Step into this new life that God is calling you to!
We, the body of Christ, are depending on your obedience.
1 Corinthians 12: 12 & 21-27
"There is one body, but it has many parts. But all its many parts make up one body. It is the same with Christ…
The eye can’t say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” In fact, it is just the opposite. The parts of the body that seem to be weaker are the ones we can’t do without. The parts that we think are less important we treat with special honor. The private parts aren’t shown. But they are treated with special care. The parts that can be shown don’t need special care. But God has put together all the parts of the body. And he has given more honor to the parts that didn’t have any. In that way, the parts of the body will not take sides. All of them will take care of one another. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it. If one part is honored, every part shares in its joy.
You are the body of Christ. Each one of you is a part of it."
In closing, I want to share that I created this blog to be a safe space. I write my thoughts and viewpoints for you all to read, comment, share or whatever else- as we feel led. I, in no way, am claiming to have all the answers. My life examples are not to be used as formulas for your own life. I’m walking this thing out daily just like you and by the grace of God, we’ll figure it out together. Lol.
I can’t tell you exactly why you were created or what God has tasked you to do during your time here. Those specific answers can only be found by getting in His presence and straight up asking Him. I do believe He creates resources like these- blogs, social media, wise counsel and godly community to help you, but ultimately you have to spend time with your Creator to know why you were created… And let the church say??? Amen.
This topic question was meant to empower us to get busy about Kingdom work. We’re not asking, “Why am I here?” to throw a pity party about how bad everything is going...No! We’re posing the question to challenge ourselves to dig deeper. To stop just going through life with no self-awareness. Step into your full identity through Christ, cultivate your unique gifts and talents, plug into community and allow God to reveal to you one day at a time- Why you are here and why He created you for such a time as this.
I love y’all with all my heart and God loves you 100000000x more. I’m praying for each and every one of you. Thank you for reading and sharing!
